As you might know, the salmon is on the list of endangered species, and as a result it is fully protected.
But the ministerial decree that tells about that also opens the possibility that a quota may be allocated to the various rivers. And of course, this is also applyes to the Storå river.
The grounds for allocating a quota is based on studies of the salmon stock in each river system. Such a survey is usually made every 3 years, and most recently it is made in Storåen in 2022. Here, the rise was estimated to be a small increase compared to 2018, namely 5,119 salmon with 83% wild salmon.
The survey is done in such a way that you fish a stretch of Storåen twice using electrodes. The first time all salmon are marked, so you can recognize them at the next fishing with electodes, which typically takes place 3-4 weeks later.
Here you fish on the same stretch, and then you count all salmon in 2 groups, namely marked and unmarked. Using different formulas, you can then calculate how many salmon there are in the river. Of course, there will be a certain margin of safety on both sides. And then you have the number of spawning stock found in the river.
Under normal circumstances, the authorities will allocate a quota of up to 10% of the stock in subsequent years, but considerations are made to take natural fluctuations of the stock in account, so severe adjustments to the quota is not necessary from year to year.
It is DTU Aqua, which in Denmark conducts these test fishings, of course with the help of the local anglers' associations. And it is also DTU Aqua, which guides the ministry in determining the size of the quota
The quotas are normally awarded in proper time before the start of the season, and they will be published on Fiskepleje.dk
The quotas are awarded wit strict rules that must be observed.
One of the prerequisites for allocating a quota to a river system is that practical work is carried out within the river(read: laying out spawning gravel).
Next, there are strict requirements for reporting all fish, both those released and those who end up at the dinner table. You can read about the fishing rules elsewhere on the HOF website.
It is the Asssociation at Storå which administers the quota allocated to the Storåsystem, and it is on their website that all reporting must be collected. Here you can always follow the development i the quota.
Here at the HOF website you can find a catch report form that automatically sends Your catch report to the Association at Storå.
In the fishing rules on the HOF website you can also find uot how big a quota that can be fished on the HOF's fishing waters, and on the front you can keep track of the amount of quota left so that you do not violate the quota rules, when you go fishing.
